Pietersen's New Role with England's White-Ball Teams

London [UK], September 7: Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen is set to take on the role of Specialist Mentor for the England men's white-ball teams as they gear up for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup scheduled for next year in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Pietersen will be part of Brendon McCullum's coaching staff for the upcoming Vitality IT20 and Metro Bank ODI series against Sri Lanka later this month.

The coaching lineup will also feature Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel, and Sarah Taylor.

In addition to the series against Sri Lanka, Pietersen will participate in England's white-ball tours to Australia and South Africa this winter. He is also expected to rejoin the team for the home series against Pakistan and New Zealand next summer, culminating in his involvement during the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Expressing his pride in this new role, Pietersen stated, “I am immensely proud to have been asked to help this team on their journey to win a World Cup in South Africa. Wearing the England uniform again for the first time since 2014 is a profound honor and a deeply special moment.”

He added, “We have an incredibly talented white-ball squad, and I am excited to get in the trenches and work relentlessly hard with these players to maximize their potential. Being part of Brendon’s think tank over the next 12 months is a fantastic opportunity, and I cannot wait to get started.”

Pietersen's international career spanned a decade, during which he played 136 ODIs and 37 T20Is for England, amassing over 5,500 runs. He also scored 8,181 runs in 104 Test matches.

Previously, he served as a mentor for the Delhi Capitals in the 2025 Indian Premier League and will now leverage his experience to benefit England's players over the next 15 months.

Having been raised in South Africa, Pietersen's insights into the local conditions and cricketing landscape are expected to be invaluable for England's ODI team as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup.

The 2027 World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
