Keshav Maharaj Reflects on Pretoria Capitals' Journey in SA20 Season 4
Maharaj Credits Team Culture for Success
Johannesburg [South Africa], August 3: Keshav Maharaj, the captain of Pretoria Capitals, attributes the franchise's impressive performance in Season 4 of the SA20 to the new leadership team he established alongside head coach Sourav Ganguly. Maharaj highlighted Ganguly's role in fostering a positive team environment, which significantly contributed to their journey to the finals, where they ultimately lost to the three-time champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC).
The Pretoria Capitals have now been runners-up in the SA20 twice, narrowly missing out on the title in both the inaugural season and the latest edition. They are set to kick off Season 5 against the defending champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, on January 17 next year.
In an exclusive interview with SA20, Maharaj spoke about his relationship with Ganguly, stating, “In tournaments like this, it’s crucial to cultivate a strong team culture, and Sourav excelled in that area. Many players embraced our goals. During the tournament, even when we weren’t playing, we would gather in the team room for dinner, watch other matches, and discuss cricket. There was a vibrant energy within the team, which was a privilege to experience.”
Maharaj expressed excitement about creating something special in their first season and hopes to build on that legacy for future generations. As they prepare for their Season 5 opener against the Sunrisers, he emphasized the importance of looking forward rather than dwelling on past disappointments.
Not only did Maharaj lead effectively, but he also made a significant impact on the field, taking 12 wickets in 12 matches with an impressive economy rate of 6.54. He also praised the enthusiastic Highveld crowd, who welcomed him warmly during his first season in Centurion after three seasons with Durban’s Super Giants.
“Transitioning to play in Pretoria was something I eagerly anticipated, especially seeing the crowd, and they truly exceeded my expectations,” Maharaj noted. “Their support during both good and challenging times was phenomenal, and it played a crucial role in our journey to the finals. Centurion is a fantastic venue for cricket, and the connection with the fans was exactly what we needed to motivate us.”
