Kapil Dev's Insights on Cricket's Popularity

Renowned former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev has expressed his admiration for the rising enthusiasm for cricket throughout the country. While attending the first semifinal of the Chandigarh Premier League at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, he noted that the excitement would have been even greater if the league had taken place in Chandigarh itself.

Dev remarked, "It's wonderful to see children enjoying the game. In recent years, leagues like this have significantly boosted the sport's popularity. It's encouraging to witness players getting ample opportunities to display their skills. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has brought immense joy to fans, offering thrilling experiences."

He further commented, "Hosting such events in Chandigarh is unparalleled. Although I'm not familiar with the technical aspects, the city has previously hosted major tournaments. It's heartening to see Chandigarh gaining recognition from the BCCI. With excellent facilities for various sports, including cricket, hockey, and badminton, the city stands out as a prime location for sports enthusiasts."

During his visit, Dev also connected with Chandigarh Sports Secretary Prerna Puri via video call to share his experiences.

Addressing young cricketers, the captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning team emphasized the pivotal role Chandigarh has played in his cricketing journey. "If I hadn't been born in Chandigarh, I might never have become a cricketer or lifted the World Cup," he stated, attributing his success to the city's vibrant sporting culture.

He encouraged the youth to seize the opportunities presented by league cricket, suggesting that state-level competitions could pave the way to the IPL and ultimately the national team.

Reflecting on his formative years, Dev reminisced about training at the Sector 16 Stadium and Sector 7 Sports Complex, where many cherished memories were forged. He concluded by stating that young athletes in the city are fortunate to have such a robust sporting environment.
