Kane Williamson's Comeback in New Zealand's Test Squad

Wellington [New Zealand], November 24: New Zealand has announced a 14-member squad for the upcoming home Test series against the West Indies, commencing December 2, with Tom Latham appointed as captain.

Star batsman Kane Williamson, who missed the Test series in Zimbabwe back in August, is now just 800 runs shy of reaching the remarkable milestone of 10,000 runs.

The squad also includes fast bowlers Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, and Blair Tickner, alongside established players Matt Henry and Nathan Smith, forming a formidable pace attack, according to the ICC.

Tickner makes his return to the Test lineup for the first time since 2023, following impressive performances in the recent ODI series against England, while Duffy and Foulkes contributed significantly during the Zimbabwe tour.

Daryl Mitchell has recovered from a minor groin injury sustained during the ODI series against the West Indies. However, Kyle Jamieson and Glenn Phillips were not selected as they continue to work on their fitness as part of New Zealand's load management strategy.

Injuries have ruled out Matt Fisher (shin), Will O'Rourke (back), and Ben Sears (hamstring) from consideration for the squad.

New Zealand's head coach, Rob Walter, expressed his enthusiasm for Williamson's return, stating, "Kane's on-field capabilities are well-known, and his leadership will be invaluable to the Test team." He added that Williamson has taken time to prepare for red-ball cricket and is eager to play for Northern Districts in the upcoming Plunket Shield match before the first Test.

Following the first Test in Christchurch, the teams will head to Wellington for the second Test starting December 10, with the third match scheduled at Bay Oval in Tauranga on December 18.

This series marks the Black Caps' first in the 2025-2027 World Test Championship, while the West Indies seek their first victory in the new cycle after suffering five consecutive losses.

New Zealand Squad for the first Test against West Indies:

Tom Latham (c), Tom Blundell, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, Kane Williamson, Will Young.
