Kane Williamson, one of the most celebrated batsmen in New Zealand cricket history, has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of an illustrious career characterized by remarkable consistency, outstanding leadership, and a calm demeanor. This announcement comes on a Friday, concluding a 16-year journey that has seen him participate in 378 matches and set numerous batting records, earning him immense respect in the cricketing community.
Williamson's decision follows his earlier withdrawal from T20 Internationals in 2025. In a statement released by New Zealand Cricket, he expressed, "I’ve contemplated this for some time, and it has become evident in recent days that now is the appropriate moment. My passion for international cricket has always been strong, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given my all in every match for New Zealand."
He further added, "Continuing at anything less wouldn’t feel right, and I feel fortunate to retire on my own terms."
At 35, Williamson stands as New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in international cricket, amassing a total of 19,346 runs, which includes over 9,500 runs in Test matches, featuring 33 centuries and six double centuries. Across all formats, he has achieved 48 centuries and six double-centuries.
Under his captaincy, the Black Caps reached two ICC World Cup Finals, three semi-finals, and clinched the inaugural World Test Championship title in 2021. His personal accolades include being named the ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2015 and the Test Player of the Year in 2019.
Currently, Williamson is in England participating in a Test series, where the Kiwis lost the first match by 115 runs, with Williamson scoring 0 and 18 in his innings.
When asked about his decision to retire now, he mentioned it has been a gradual realization. "It sort of dawned on me in the last few days that it felt like the time was right for me to step away..."
He also expressed his admiration for the current team, stating, "I see a really talented group that is eager to achieve remarkable things with New Zealand cricket, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of this journey for so long."
Williamson emphasized his respect for the Black Caps and the sport itself, stating, "It feels right to make this decision today."
