Kane Williamson's New Role with Lucknow Super Giants

Cricket enthusiasts can expect to see Kane Williamson frequently in the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) locker room during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The team kicked off their campaign on April 1 with a match against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Although he is not part of the playing squad, Williamson has joined the LSG camp while continuing his active participation in ODI and Test cricket for New Zealand, as well as various franchise leagues globally. He opted out of the player auction held in Abu Dhabi last December, which resulted in him remaining unsold during the 2025 IPL mega auction. His last appearance in the league was in 2024 when he played for the Gujarat Titans (GT), having spent most of his IPL career with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) from 2015 to 2023.

Kane Williamson's Role at LSG

Williamson has taken on the position of 'strategic advisor' with LSG, marking his first venture into a backroom role within a franchise. The team, owned by Sanjiv Goenka, has also signed him to their sister team, the Durban Super Giants, where he participated in the 2025-26 SA20 league. Goenka expressed his enthusiasm about Williamson's appointment, stating, "Kane has been a part of the Super Giants family, and it's an absolute delight to welcome him in his new role. His leadership, strategic insight, and deep understanding of the game make him an invaluable asset to the team." Williamson himself shared his excitement about joining LSG, highlighting the talented squad and coaching staff he looks forward to collaborating with. He remarked, "It's always special being involved in the IPL, the best franchise competition in the game." This addition is part of a broader overhaul of LSG's support staff ahead of the new season, which includes Tom Moody as the new director of cricket. While Zaheer Khan has departed, Justin Langer remains as head coach. Despite a decline in IPL interest, Williamson has remained active in franchise cricket, participating in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the Hundred, and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in 2025.
