Kajal Vaja Shines at Asian U-20 Championships, Secures Silver Medal for India
Kajal Vaja's Inspiring Journey to Success
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], May 31: Kajal Vaja, a promising sprint athlete from Gujarat, has once again proven that with determination and hard work, athletes can rise from humble beginnings to achieve international success.
The 19-year-old sprinter hailing from Chorwad village in Junagadh district played a crucial role in securing a silver medal for India in the women's 4x100m relay at the 22nd Asian U-20 Athletics Championships held in Hong Kong on Sunday.
Competing alongside teammates Bhavna from Tamil Nadu, Arti from Haryana, and Nipam from Uttar Pradesh, Kajal and her team clocked an impressive time of 45.05 seconds, breaking the previous national U-20 record of 45.08 seconds. Their performance showcased remarkable speed and teamwork.
Kajal's story is particularly motivational given her modest upbringing. Her father, Hirabhai Vaja, is a farm laborer in their coastal village. Despite facing financial hurdles, Kajal remained dedicated to her athletic pursuits, making significant sacrifices along the way.
To focus on her training, she took a gap year from her Class 12 studies, a decision that ultimately proved beneficial. Her uncle, Manthan Dabhi, noted, "Kajal has always had a passion for sports and has consistently performed well in competitions."
Her coach, Shivam Upadhyay, credits Kajal's success to her relentless commitment to training and her desire for excellence. "Kajal is among the most promising young sprinters in India, having represented Gujarat with pride and earned numerous medals in various events. Her discipline and competitive spirit are exceptional," he stated.
Kajal's recent silver medal adds to her impressive accolades, including a silver in the 4x100m relay at the South Asian Senior Athletics Championships 2025 in Ranchi. She also holds the national U-20 record in the 60m sprint.
Earlier this year, she achieved gold at the First Indoor Open Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, setting a national record in the 60m sprint with a time of 7.50 seconds, further establishing her as one of India's top sprinting talents.
Her athletic journey began with the School Programme of the Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG), and she later joined the District Level Sports School (DLSS) in Kodinar in 2019. Recognizing her potential, she was selected for the High-Performance Centre (HPC) in Nadiad in 2023, where she continues to receive advanced training.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi congratulated Kajal and the Indian relay team for their remarkable achievement. "Under Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel's leadership, we are dedicated to providing all necessary support for our athletes to realize their global aspirations. Kajal's success is a proud moment for both Gujarat and the nation," he remarked.
Kajal's achievement follows another remarkable performance by a Gujarat athlete, Rahul Jakhar, who won the decathlon gold medal and set a new national record at the same championship.
With her strong work ethic, record-breaking performances, and a growing list of international accomplishments, Kajal Vaja is emerging as one of India's most exciting young sprinting talents, representing Gujarat's sporting ambitions on the continental stage.
