Kagiso Rabada's Fitness in Focus Ahead of First Test Against Australia
Rabada's Race Against Time for Test Match
Durban [South Africa], October 8: South Africa is set to give their leading fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada, until the last moment before the first Test against Australia to confirm his fitness. The opening match of the three-match series is scheduled to commence on October 9 at Kingsmead, as reported by the ICC.
Rabada has been sidelined since his appearance for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the end of May. The right-arm fast bowler is working hard to recover from a hamstring injury he sustained during training in August, aiming to be fit for the series against Australia.
Last month, South Africa's head coach, Shukri Conrad, mentioned that Rabada's rehabilitation was on track. The 31-year-old was spotted bowling in the nets during a training session on Wednesday, just ahead of the first Test in Durban.
However, teammate Simon Harmer suggested that a definitive decision regarding Rabada's participation would likely be made shortly before the match begins.
“Everyone is eager for him to play, including the fans, us in the locker room, and the Australians. I can't say for sure where he stands,” Harmer commented, as per ICC reports.
“A decision will be made as close to the game as possible. He has consistently shown that he is a world-class player, and his presence would undoubtedly strengthen our team,” he added.
Harmer also noted that even if Rabada is unable to participate in the first Test, there will be ample opportunities in the upcoming months for him to contribute at the Test level.
“I sincerely hope he can make it for the first Test, but there’s a lot of cricket ahead this summer, and we don’t want to jeopardize his long-term health for a short-term gain,” Harmer stated.
Following their home series against Australia, South Africa will take on Bangladesh in a two-match series in November, followed by a three-match home series against England in December, as they aim to defend the World Test Championship (WTC) title they secured against Australia at Lord's last year.
