Julian Alvarez Aims for Back-to-Back World Cup Glory with Argentina
Argentina's Ambition for World Cup Success
Buenos Aires, Argentina - May 26: Julian Alvarez, a key player in Argentina's triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, expressed the team's desire to secure another championship title, which would solidify their status among the greatest teams in football history.
In the upcoming tournament, Argentina is set to compete in Group J alongside Austria, Jordan, and Algeria, with their first match against Algeria scheduled for June 16 in Kansas City.
Alvarez, who plays for Atletico Madrid, shared his thoughts with FIFA, acknowledging that reaching the finals again will be a challenging task. However, he emphasized the team's commitment to being as prepared as possible.
“As an Argentinian, the excitement is always present, and we aim to be champions once more. We are determined to reach the final. We understand it won't be easy; it will demand a lot from us, and the outcome may hinge on small details, but we will prepare thoroughly and take it one step at a time,” he stated.
He expressed immense pride in heading into this World Cup as the reigning champions, stating, “We want to defend our title and bring joy to our people again.”
Alvarez reflected on the significance of potentially retaining the World Cup, noting that the team has also secured two Copa America titles during this period, marking it as their “golden era.”
“If we manage to keep the World Cup, it will be historic, as we would become back-to-back champions and two-time Copa America winners. This has been a golden era for our nation, and we hope to create even more unforgettable moments,” he added.
He acknowledged the possibility that this World Cup could be the last for Lionel Messi, who finally achieved World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022.
“We are all aware that this might be Leo's final World Cup, considering his age, but ultimately, it’s his choice. This will undoubtedly be a special tournament, not just for us and the Argentinian fans, but for everyone who admires him, as he is regarded as the greatest player of all time,” Alvarez remarked.
He fondly recalled the pivotal 2-0 victory over Mexico in the last World Cup, which helped the team recover from an unexpected 1-2 defeat to Saudi Arabia and advance to the knockout stage after defeating Poland.
“That match was a turning point for us. From that moment, everything fell into place, and we realized our destiny was in our hands,” he said.
Alvarez concluded by stating that while his playing style hasn't drastically changed since 2022, he has gained valuable experience and improved in various aspects of his game. “Wearing this jersey gives you an extra motivation, and you do improve over time, even if you don’t notice it,” he added.
