Jude Bellingham Faces Tough Competition for England's World Cup Squad
Bellingham's Challenge Ahead of FIFA World Cup
London [UK], June 8: England's head coach Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Jude Bellingham will encounter significant competition for a spot in the starting lineup at the FIFA World Cup. The Real Madrid midfielder is among a group of talented players competing for positions in a highly skilled squad.
The 22-year-old has participated in just four of England's qualifying matches, while Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers has played in all eight, underscoring the fierce competition for the attacking midfield position as Tuchel evaluates his options leading up to the tournament.
Tuchel stated, “Yes, he has. He knows he is one of the starters, but we have 14 or 15 potential starters. These roles can always change, but at the moment I think there are 14 or 15 proper starters and Jude is one of them.”
As England continues its World Cup preparations in Florida, they kicked off their warm-up campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over New Zealand in Tampa, thanks to a goal from Harry Kane.
Bellingham took on the captaincy for the first time during the second half, as Tuchel rotated players to cope with the challenging hot and humid conditions. This match provided the England manager with another chance to evaluate his squad ahead of the tournament.
Despite the stiff competition, Tuchel expressed optimism about Bellingham's recent performance since his return from injury. “He looks good in training. I think he is currently in a sweet spot because he has had his break and has the hunger to be back on the pitch,” he remarked.
England, former World Cup champions, are placed in Group L with Croatia, Ghana, and Panama, and will commence their FIFA World Cup journey against Croatia in Arlington, Texas, on June 18.
