West Indies Announce U19 World Cup Squad

Saint John’s [Antigua and Barbuda], December 17: Joshua Dorne has been appointed as the captain of the West Indies team for the upcoming ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, as reported by a leading sports news outlet on Tuesday.


This prestigious tournament is set to take place in Zimbabwe and Namibia from January to February 2026. All-rounder Jonathan Van Lange will serve as Dorne's vice-captain.


The 15-member squad features Jewel Andrew, a promising 19-year-old who has already made appearances in three ODIs and five T20Is for the senior national team.


Dwain Gill, the High Performance Manager of Cricket West Indies, stated, “In forming this team, we have focused on aligning their growth with the expected style of play at the senior level, ensuring they gain experience in high-quality matches, and emphasizing leadership, tactical understanding, and individual support within their regions,” as quoted by the sports news outlet.


In the Under-19 World Cup, the West Indies are placed in Group D, competing against South Africa, Afghanistan, and Tanzania. Their first match will be against Tanzania in Windhoek on January 15.


The tournament will commence on January 15, featuring five-time champions India facing the USA, while hosts Zimbabwe will take on Scotland, and debutants Tanzania will meet the West Indies on the opening day.


With the final scheduled for February 6, this event will highlight the best emerging talents from the participating nations. The tournament format will mirror previous editions, with 16 teams divided into four groups during the initial stage.


According to the ICC, a total of 41 matches will be held over 23 days, co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia. Defending champions Australia, who triumphed over India in the 2024 finals, will begin their campaign against Ireland on the second day in Windhoek, Namibia.
