Buttler's Remarkable Comeback

In a thrilling match of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) on April 8, Jos Buttler made headlines as he showcased his batting prowess with a stunning 52 runs off just 27 balls. This performance came during the encounter between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals, where the Titans opted to bat first after winning the toss. Buttler's explosive innings contributed significantly to the team's powerplay total of 67 runs, with an impressive 47 runs scored by him, including five towering sixes. He entered the crease in the third over following the dismissal of Sai Sudharsan by Mukesh Kumar and immediately took charge, ultimately falling to Kuldeep Yadav after his remarkable innings. This marked Buttler's first half-century of the season and his first in T20 cricket since January.

Historic Achievements

Buttler's Record-Breaking Sixes

Buttler's five sixes set a new record for the most sixes hit by a non-opening batsman during the powerplay in IPL history. The only player to surpass this is Suresh Raina, who hit six sixes while batting at number three or lower during a memorable 25-ball 87 against Punjab Kings in the 2014 IPL qualifier. This innings remains the highest run total in the powerplay and boasts the best strike rate in IPL history.

Additionally, Buttler has now become the first wicketkeeper-batter to achieve five sixes in the powerplay on two occasions in IPL, matching his previous record set against the Capitals in 2018 while playing for Rajasthan Royals. Adam Gilchrist also managed five sixes against the same team in 2009.

Buttler's achievement is particularly notable as he is the first player to hit five sixes in the powerplay against the Capitals twice, marking a significant milestone for both him and the franchise.

Overall, Buttler has now accumulated a total of 18 sixes during the powerplay in his IPL career, placing him second only to Rohit Sharma, who has 20. With this performance, Buttler surpassed Chris Gayle's previous record of 15 sixes among overseas players. He is also the first player from Gujarat Titans to hit five sixes in a single innings during the powerplay, breaking the previous record held by Wriddhiman Saha, who managed four against LSG in 2023. Buttler's 47 runs are the second-highest for the Titans, following Saha's 54 in that match.
