Manchester [UK], July 25: Joe Root, the world’s top-ranked Test batter and a stalwart of England cricket, has once again demonstrated his prowess against India, achieving a remarkable milestone by scoring his 12th century against the Indian team on Friday.
This achievement took place during the fourth Test match held at Old Trafford. With this century, Root has now accumulated nine Test hundreds against India on home soil, setting a new record for the most centuries by any player against a single opponent in home Tests, surpassing the legendary Don Bradman, who had eight against England.
Root's century marks his 23rd Test hundred in England, tying him with Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Mahela Jayawardene for the most centuries scored in home Tests.
Additionally, Root has overtaken former Australian captain Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket history. Ponting amassed 13,378 runs in 168 Tests at an average of 51.85, including 41 centuries and 62 fifties, with a top score of 257. Root, now with 13,380 runs in 157 Tests at an average of 51.26, has achieved 38 centuries and 66 fifties, with his highest score being 262.
Root's latest century also ties him with Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara for the joint fourth-most centuries in Test cricket, trailing only behind Ponting (41), Jacques Kallis (45), and Sachin Tendulkar (51).
In the ongoing match, Root and Ben Stokes contributed significantly, adding 84 runs off 131 balls before tea, with England at 433/4, leading by 75 runs. At that point, Root was unbeaten on 121, while Stokes was on 36.
England resumed the second session at 332/2, with Ollie Pope (70*) and Root (63*) at the crease, trailing by 26 runs.
