Joe Root Achieves Milestone Century in Ashes Test Against Australia
Root's Historic Century in Australia
Joe Root has finally achieved a significant milestone by scoring a century in an Ashes test match for England while playing in Australia, marking a notable addition to his already impressive cricket career.
The top-ranked batter in Test cricket ended a lengthy 15-match century drought in Australia, a streak that dated back to 2013, when he reached the three-figure mark on Thursday during the first night session of the second test at the Gabba.
This marks Root's fourth Ashes tour to Australia, where his previous best score had been 89. In the series opener in Perth, he unfortunately scored 0 and 8, contributing to an eight-wicket defeat.
Former England captain Alastair Cook commented on the achievement, stating on TNT Sports, 'Even Australians have to admit he is a great now.'
Root was 88 not out at the drinks break during the night session and soon moved into the 90s with a boundary off Brendan Doggett, followed by another boundary that brought him to 96.
As Root approached his century, Will Jacks was dismissed for 19 after chasing a wild shot against Mitchell Starc, concluding their partnership at 40 runs, with England at 251-7.
Not wanting to miss the opportunity, Root secured his century with a legside boundary against Scott Boland, celebrated by kissing the badge on his helmet and raising his bat in acknowledgment of the milestone.
The England and Wales Cricket Board took to X to express their admiration, stating, 'No doubt before. No doubt now. A true great of the game.'
This century marks Root's 40th in his 160-test career, solidifying his position as the second-highest run-scorer in cricket history.
