Jemimah Rodrigues Emphasizes Aggression Ahead of T20 World Cup Showdown

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 26: As India gears up for their final league match in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup against Australia, batter Jemimah Rodrigues stressed the need for an aggressive approach. She noted that Australia is a formidable opponent that thrives on putting pressure on other teams, making it essential for India to avoid a defensive strategy.

The match, set to take place at the historic Lord's on Sunday, is pivotal for India's semifinal aspirations. Currently, India holds the second position in the points table with three victories and one defeat, totaling six points. South Africa trails closely in third place, sharing the same record but facing a less challenging opponent, Bangladesh, while India faces the six-time champions, Australia.

During an appearance on JioStar’s ‘Champions Huddle’, Jemimah reflected on the importance of maintaining an attacking mindset against Australia. Known for her remarkable 127* in the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup semifinal, where she led India to chase down a record 339 against Australia, she is eager to replicate that success. However, her current performance in the T20 World Cup has been modest, with only 58 runs across four innings and a top score of 26.

“Australia never allows you to settle. They are consistently aggressive and apply pressure. To succeed against them, you cannot play defensively. You must take the initiative and challenge them, which our team relishes. We understand that we need to match their intensity and stay ahead,” she stated.

Jemimah also praised teammates Shafali Varma and Renuka Thakur for their past performances against Australia, highlighting their experience. She believes that the team must demonstrate their aggressive intent to succeed. “Shafali has faced them numerous times, and Renuka has bowled effectively against them. Most of our players have valuable experience. Ultimately, it comes down to execution. We need to trust ourselves and play aggressively. If we do that, everything will align,” she added.

Head coach Amol Muzumdar discussed the transformation of the team since he took over in October 2023, emphasizing the need for a shift in mindset and approach. He noted that the team has evolved significantly, implementing new systems and encouraging players to take on more responsibility.

“The players have embraced the changes, supporting one another, and the results reflect that. This Indian women’s team is markedly different from two years ago. While Australia is undeniably strong, we have proven ourselves as well. Our historic 2-1 T20 series victory in Australia was a significant confidence booster. We can draw strength from that as we prepare for the World Cup match,” he concluded.
