Durban, April 18: Following a six-wicket loss to South Africa in the first T20I at Kingsmead, Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues acknowledged that the team fell short with their batting performance despite a promising start. This match marked the beginning of a five-match series, which serves as crucial preparation for both teams ahead of the T20 World Cup starting June 12 in England.
Rodrigues expressed that India was approximately 15-20 runs short of a competitive total, praising Shafali Verma's impressive batting. She noted, “With the kind of start we got, I think Shafali Verma, the way she batted was great,” emphasizing the missed opportunity to capitalize during the powerplay.
Although India began strongly, they lost two quick wickets. However, Rodrigues and captain Harmanpreet Kaur managed to stabilize the innings with a vital partnership. She admitted, “When we had built that momentum and removed the difficult part of it, when time came to capitalize, we were not able to capitalize.”
Jemimah pointed out the challenging batting conditions during the first innings, stating, “There was slight hold on the wicket. But yeah, definitely we were 15 runs short.”
Reflecting on the middle-order batting, she emphasized the need for players to back their intent in high-pressure situations, saying, “I know Harman and I could have gone deep. Even Richa, little here and there, it was a six.”
She highlighted the importance of gaining match experience for India's all-rounders as they prepare for the World Cup, stating, “Playing here in South Africa is going to be really great for us as a preparation also for the World Cup and for our entire batting order too.”
On the bowling side, Jemimah praised the team's effort but called for improved execution, noting, “Coming in the second innings, I think our bowlers did really well to get it to the last over.”
She reiterated the necessity of batting through the innings, mentioning, “I felt in the first innings, the ball was gripping a bit. It was just that when the time came for us to capitalize, I got out at the wrong time.”
Looking forward to the next match, Jemimah expressed confidence in the team's ability to adapt to conditions and improve collectively, stating, “We know that this pitch might have slight turn and slight hold.”
