Jemimah Rodrigues Aims for Historic Women's T20 World Cup Victory at Lord's
Aiming for Glory at Lord's
In New Delhi, Jemimah Rodrigues, an Indian batter, expressed the team's ambition to create a historic moment at Lord's, inspired by Kapil Dev and the legendary 1983 Men's World Cup victory. As the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 approaches in England and Wales, Rodrigues emphasized the significance of potentially winning India's first women's T20 World Cup title at this iconic venue.
Rodrigues remarked, "Kapil Dev and the Indian men's team achieved their first World Cup there. We aspire to win our inaugural Women's T20 World Cup at the same place. That would be incredibly exciting," during an interview with the ICC.
Entering the tournament after a remarkable performance in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, where she scored an unbeaten 127 runs against Australia, Rodrigues noted that this victory has lifted mental barriers within the team and ignited a stronger desire for success.
"The pressure is off our shoulders now," she stated. "However, it’s more about motivation. Having experienced the joy of lifting a World Cup, we crave more victories. Our team is now more driven and eager. We also recognize the positive impact this has had on women's cricket in India, and we aim to continue that legacy in England," she added.
The 25-year-old highlighted the team's resilience and determination, stating, "This team possesses character. To win crucial matches, you need individuals who are unique yet share a common goal of winning. This attitude is what defines great character, and I believe our team will find ways to secure victories in any situation."
Reflecting on her personal journey leading up to her pivotal innings against Australia, Rodrigues shared how past challenges prepared her for high-pressure situations. "I learned that sometimes, just showing up is essential, as life tends to align things for the best," she recalled.
She emphasized that her years of setbacks have shaped her mindset for critical moments, stating, "Those four years prepared me for such occasions, as I had to draw on the lessons learned from my failures. Sometimes, especially in tough times, all you need to do is stand firm and trust that everything will work out," she concluded.
India, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, is set to compete in Group 1 alongside formidable teams like Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands. Their campaign kicks off against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 14 at Edgbaston in Birmingham, a match that holds special memories for Rodrigues from the previous tournament.
Recalling a tense moment from that match, she said, "We needed 41 runs from 24 balls, which is a lot of pressure in a World Cup. We managed to chase it down, and that was a memorable experience for me."
As India gears up for the tournament, fans are hopeful that Rodrigues will continue to deliver outstanding performances as they strive for their first Women's T20 World Cup title this summer.
