Jasprit Bumrah's Struggles Continue as Mumbai Indians Fight for IPL Survival
Bumrah's Underwhelming Performance in IPL 2026
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] - As the IPL 2026 season progresses, Mumbai Indians' fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has only managed to secure three wickets across ten matches. This disappointing performance has raised significant concerns for the team, which currently sits in ninth place on the points table with a record of three wins and seven losses.
Bumrah's economy rate stands at 8.89, and his bowling average has plummeted to 109.67 this season, indicating a stark decline in form.
During a discussion on JioHotstar's 'Champions Waali Commentary', former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan voiced his worries regarding Bumrah's current state. He noted, “In the previous season, Bumrah took 18 wickets in 12 matches with an impressive economy of 6.7. However, this season has been a struggle for him. With only three wickets in ten games and a high economy rate, it’s clear that when wickets are hard to come by, the economy suffers. His current bowling average of 105 is unexpected for a player of his caliber. It’s disheartening to see him struggle after his outstanding performance in the T20 World Cup.”
Ravi Shastri, another former cricketer and commentator, also shared insights into Bumrah's challenges. He suggested that Bumrah's difficulties may stem from both physical and mental fatigue due to a demanding schedule with the Indian team over the past year. Shastri emphasized the importance of managing Bumrah's fitness, especially with a busy calendar ahead, including multiple Test series and the upcoming 50-over World Cup.
On a brighter note, MI secured their third victory of the season on Monday, defeating Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by six wickets at Wankhede Stadium. After winning the toss, MI chose to bowl first, with LSG scoring 228/5 in their 20 overs, thanks to contributions from Nicholas Pooran (63 off 21 balls), Mitchell Marsh (44 off 25 balls), and Himmat Singh (40* off 31 balls).
However, MI's chase was bolstered by a remarkable opening partnership of 143 runs between Ryan Rickelton (83 off 32 balls) and Rohit Sharma (84 off 44 balls), allowing them to complete the chase in just 18.4 overs.
With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, MI urgently needs Bumrah to return to his peak form to keep their chances alive.
