Jasprit Bumrah Takes the Helm at Mumbai Indians Amid Captaincy Controversy
Bumrah's First Match as MI Captain
Jasprit Bumrah has drawn attention to the contentious captaincy change at Mumbai Indians (MI) during the 2024 season. He took charge of the team for the first time in their IPL match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala. The star bowler is stepping in for regular captain Hardik Pandya and vice-captain Surykumar Yadav, who are both unavailable. Reflecting on his new role, Bumrah noted that he has previously captained India in Test cricket and did not anticipate leading his franchise after that experience. "It feels great. I joined this team as a 19-year-old and never imagined I would captain MI before leading the national team. This is a fun environment, and I enjoy taking on responsibility. It’s a new challenge for me," Bumrah expressed during the toss.
Social Media Reactions
His remarks quickly became a hot topic on social media, with cricket fans interpreting them as a subtle critique of the management for not appointing him as a full-time captain after Rohit Sharma.

Background on the Captaincy Shift
The MI Captaincy Controversy
To provide context, Hardik Pandya took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2024 season, a decision that sparked considerable debate. Pandya was appointed captain shortly after transferring from Gujarat Titans, where he had previously played. Although he began his IPL journey with MI, he left the team before the 2022 mega auction. The decision to replace Rohit was met with criticism, and both Suryakumar and Bumrah expressed their discontent through cryptic posts on social media.
Bumrah has been a part of MI since 2013 and has never played for another franchise. He is the second-longest-serving player in the team after Rohit. Notably, he captained MI in his 156th IPL match, making him one of the players with the most games played before taking on a captaincy role, surpassed only by Ravindra Jadeja (200 matches). Bumrah first captained India in a Test match in July 2022 and has since led the national team in three Tests and two T20Is.
