Historic Performance by Jasprit Bumrah

In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on March 9, Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah etched his name in T20 World Cup history by becoming the first pacer to achieve a four-wicket haul in knockout matches. This remarkable feat allowed him to surpass Lasith Malinga, establishing himself as the leading fast bowler in the tournament's history.

Playing at his home ground, Bumrah showcased his exceptional skills, leading India to a commanding victory over New Zealand by 96 runs. His four wickets, combined with Axar Patel's impressive three-wicket haul, dismantled New Zealand's batting lineup during their daunting chase of 256 runs.

With this win, India has clinched their second consecutive T20 World Cup title and their third overall. They also made history as the first host nation to win and defend the title. Bumrah played a pivotal role in this triumph, finishing as one of the tournament's top wicket-takers alongside Varun Chakravarthy, with 14 wickets at an average of 12.42 and an economy rate of 6.21.

Bumrah's achievement of a four-wicket haul in a T20 World Cup knockout match places him alongside spinners Ajantha Mendis and Shadab Khan, making him the third bowler overall to accomplish this.

Currently, Bumrah ranks as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history, with 40 wickets from 26 matches, averaging 13.65 and maintaining an economy rate of 5.66. He has surpassed Malinga, who has 38 wickets in 31 matches.

The leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history remains Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan, with 50 wickets in 43 matches.

Bumrah's credentials as one of the tournament's greatest bowlers are solidified by his two title wins. In 2024, he was named 'Player of the Tournament' after taking 15 wickets in eight matches at an average of 8.26. Now, in 2026, he has topped the wicket-taking charts and earned the 'Player of the Match' award in the final.

In the final match, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first. However, Abhishek Sharma's explosive return to form, scoring 52 runs off just 21 balls, alongside a 98-run partnership with Samson, made New Zealand regret their decision. Samson later formed a century partnership with Ishan Kishan, who contributed 54 runs off 25 balls, propelling India past the 200-run mark in the 16th over. Shivam Dube's late surge of 26 runs off eight balls helped India reach a record total of 255/5, the highest in T20 World Cup finals.

James Neesham was New Zealand's standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for 46 runs.

In response to India's 256, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah quickly reduced New Zealand to 72/5, despite Tim Seifert's half-century. A brief partnership between Daryl Mitchell and captain Mitchell Santner could not save the Kiwis, who were ultimately bowled out for just 159 runs.
