Jasprit Bumrah Makes History as Mumbai Indians' Captain in IPL 2026
Mumbai Indians' Historic Leadership Change
In a remarkable turn of events, the Mumbai Indians (MI) made history as Jasprit Bumrah took the helm as captain during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 14. This match, held at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) in Dharamshala, saw Bumrah join Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav as the first trio of Indian players to lead the same team in a single IPL season. This marks only the fifth occasion in IPL history where a team has been captained by three different players in one season, with MI being the first franchise to achieve this feat in two separate seasons, having previously done so in 2008.
Historically, in the previous instances of three players leading a team in an IPL season, at least one of the captains was an overseas player. Notably, the Pune Warriors India in 2013 is the only case where three foreign players led the team during the same season.
Instances of Three Captains in One IPL Season
| Team | Year | Captains |
| Mumbai Indians | 2008 | Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, Sachin Tendulkar |
| Pune Warriors India | 2013 | Angelo Matthews, Ross Taylor, Aaron Finch |
| Sunrisers Hyderabad | 2021 | David Warner, Kane Williamson, Manish Pandey |
| Punjab Kings | 2024 | Shikhar Dhawan, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma |
| Mumbai Indians | 2026 | Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah |
Reasons Behind Bumrah's Captaincy
Jasprit Bumrah stepped up as MI's captain due to the absence of both Hardik Pandya, who is sidelined with a back injury, and vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav, who is unavailable for personal reasons. This match marked the fourth game of the season that Hardik has missed, and the third consecutive match without him. Previously, Suryakumar had taken charge during Hardik's absence. With this, Bumrah became the tenth player to captain MI in the IPL, joining the ranks of notable leaders such as Harbhajan Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, and Rohit Sharma.
Bumrah's Historic Captaincy Debut
This match against PBKS was a significant milestone for Bumrah, as it was his first time leading a team in the IPL. Since starting his career in 2013, he has exclusively played for MI. The game was his 156th in the IPL, making his wait to captain a team one of the longest in the league's history, surpassed only by Ravindra Jadeja.
Players with Most Matches Before Leading an IPL Team
| Player | Matches |
| Ravindra Jadeja | 200 |
| Jasprit Bumrah | 156 |
| Manish Pandey | 153 |
| Axar Patel | 148 |
| Kieron Pollard | 137 |
| Suryakumar Yadav | 126 |
Bumrah's Successful Captaincy Debut
In his inaugural match as captain, Bumrah led MI to a thrilling six-wicket victory over PBKS, successfully chasing down a target of 201 runs with just one ball remaining. Tilak Varma was the standout performer, scoring 75 runs off 33 balls. Although Shardul Thakur shone with a four-wicket haul, Bumrah's bowling performance was less impressive, as he ended the match wicketless, conceding 35 runs in four overs. This season has been challenging for Bumrah, who has only taken three wickets in 12 matches, a rare downturn in his otherwise stellar career, during which he has contributed to all five of MI's title wins.
