Prime Minister's Praise for Team Spirit
On July 1, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed her admiration for the national football team's spirited performance during the FIFA World Cup 2026, despite their exit in the Round of 32 against Brazil. She noted that the players inspired countless fans with their bravery and determination.
In a post shared on X, Takaichi mentioned that she had watched the match against Brazil after missing the live broadcast, commending the team's effort against one of the tournament's favorites.
Takaichi highlighted that the Japan national football team had advanced to the knockout stage and delivered an impressive performance against Brazil, a strong contender for the title. "I missed the live broadcast, but I finally got to see the match last night," she stated.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the players demonstrated Japan's strength through a blend of individual talent, teamwork, and a player-led strategy, noting that they achieved their highest number of goals in a single World Cup match during this tournament.

Takaichi remarked, "In this tournament, the Japanese players showcased their remarkable individual skills, strong team cohesion, and a player-driven approach, marking a significant achievement by scoring the most goals in a single match in our history. Although we initially took the lead against Brazil, we narrowly missed out on victory. However, the way they faced such a formidable opponent brought courage and inspiration to many of our citizens," she added.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged head coach Takeshi Mori, along with the support staff and players, for their relentless efforts despite facing injuries within the team.
"I was truly moved by the players and staff, including Director Mori, who carried the hopes of injured teammates, communicated as a cohesive unit, and gave their all until the final whistle," Takaichi remarked.
Looking Ahead
Expressing her gratitude to the team and the Japan Football Association, Takaichi wished for their continued success in future tournaments and expressed her hope that Japan would eventually lift the FIFA World Cup trophy.
"To the Japanese players who displayed such a remarkable fight, to Director Mori and the entire staff, and to everyone at the Japan Football Association, I extend my heartfelt thanks, along with my wishes for even greater achievements ahead.
