Jannik Sinner Makes History with Miami Open Victory and Sunshine Double
Sinner's Historic Achievement at the Miami Open
Miami [US], March 30: Jannik Sinner has made a significant mark in tennis history by winning the Miami Open, successfully completing the prestigious 'Sunshine Double' in a commanding manner.
The Italian star defeated Jiri Lehecka with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the hard-court final, becoming the first male player since Roger Federer in 2017 to win both Indian Wells and Miami in the same season. Remarkably, he achieved this milestone without losing a single set throughout the two tournaments.
Sinner has now extended his remarkable streak to 34 consecutive sets won at the ATP Masters 1000 level, a run that began at the previous year's Paris Masters, and has improved his season record to an impressive 19 wins and 2 losses.
"Winning the Sunshine Double for the first time is incredibly meaningful to me. I never imagined I could achieve this because it's quite challenging. We managed to do it, and I’m very pleased," Sinner expressed after his victory, according to the ATP Tour website.
Following a 90-minute rain delay, Sinner quickly took control of the match against Lehecka, who had reached the final without being broken throughout the tournament, saving all nine break points he faced in five matches.
The Italian, who has claimed 26 tour-level titles, broke serve early in Lehecka's second service game and maintained relentless pressure, creating 11 break-point chances during the match.
Lehecka tried to respond, reaching a 0/40 lead in Sinner's next service game, but the Italian displayed remarkable composure, firing five consecutive first serves to escape the situation unscathed.
Throughout the one-hour and 33-minute match, Sinner controlled the exchanges, consistently forcing Lehecka to hit above shoulder height on his forehand. Although the Czech player attempted to be aggressive at the net, winning an impressive 13 out of 19 points, it was not enough to overcome Sinner's clinical performance.
Currently, Sinner is trailing World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz by 1,190 points in the ATP Rankings.
