Sinner Triumphs in Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo [Monaco], April 13: Italian tennis sensation Jannik Sinner achieved a significant milestone by winning his inaugural clay court ATP Masters 1000 title, overcoming rival Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling match at the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday, held under breezy conditions.

Sinner showcased his skills with a score of 7-6(5), 6-3, not only securing the championship but also ensuring he ascends to the number one ranking on Monday.

In a contest lasting two hours and 15 minutes, Sinner became the second player, alongside Novak Djokovic, to clinch both the Miami Open and the Monte Carlo Masters consecutively.

“We aimed to play as many matches as possible and gain valuable insights ahead of upcoming major tournaments. Today, both of us performed at a high level,” Sinner remarked during his on-court interview, as reported by the ATP's official website.

“The wind was a factor, creating different conditions than what the tournament typically offers. Achieving this result is incredible. Returning to the No. 1 spot is significant for me... Winning a major title on this surface is something I had not accomplished before, and it holds great importance,” he added.

With strong support from the crowd at Court Rainier III, Sinner clinched the first set after a tie-break, capitalizing on a double fault from Alcaraz. The 24-year-old rallied from a 1-3 deficit in the second set to secure victory against the Spanish player, who made 45 unforced errors.

“I felt close on the return games, and the new balls worked in my favor. The ball change at 2-1 was crucial, and I focused on maintaining my mental strength. Although I felt a bit fatigued, keeping the right mindset was essential, and winning this trophy means a lot to me,” he explained.

Sinner is now the third player to win four consecutive ATP Masters 1000 titles, joining the ranks of Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, an 11-time champion at Monte Carlo.

During the trophy presentation, Alcaraz congratulated Sinner, stating, “What you are achieving is impressive. Only one player has won the 'Sunshine Double' and Monte Carlo, and now you are the second. It’s an incredible feat, and I just experienced how challenging it is. Congratulations on everything and the hard work you’ve put in with your team.”

Sinner did not drop a set on his way to victory in Paris, Indian Wells, and Miami, completing the 'Sunshine Double' without losing a single set. The second seed has now won his last 17 matches, ending a 37-match win streak against Tomas Machac during the Monte Carlo Masters. Sinner has improved his head-to-head record against Alcaraz to 7-10.
