Anderson Steps Up as Interim Captain for Lancashire

New Delhi [India] June 17: Legendary former England fast bowler James Anderson is poised to take the helm as captain of Lancashire for their upcoming County Championship matches. This interim role comes as Marcus Harris returns to Australia for the birth of his child, as reported by a sports news outlet.

Anderson has made one appearance in the Championship this season, having missed the initial six weeks due to a calf injury. However, he has shown impressive form in the Vitality Blast.

His first match as captain will be against Kent in Blackpool, marking his debut in leading a professional team.

This summer, Anderson will be the third captain for Lancashire's red-ball team, following Harris, who took over from Keaton Jennings after a challenging start to the season that also led to Dale Benkenstein's departure as head coach.

Currently, Lancashire sits near the bottom of Division Two, having drawn five and lost two out of seven matches. In contrast, they have had a strong start in the Blast, winning four out of six games and ranking third in the North Group. Anderson has contributed significantly, returning to the format after more than a decade and claiming ten wickets in four matches.

Following Friday's fixtures, the Blast will pause for two rounds of the Championship, with Lancashire facing Kent at home before traveling to Derbyshire in Chesterfield.

While Harris will be absent for both matches, Lancashire can rely on their Australian overseas players, Ashton Turner and Chris Green.

Anderson, who recently concluded his international career with 188 Test matches, is celebrated as England's finest fast bowler.

He holds the record as England's top wicket-taker in ODI cricket, with an impressive 269 wickets, a record that may remain unmatched. However, he only took 18 wickets in his 19 T20I appearances, with his last match in this format occurring against South Africa in Centurion back in 2009.

The 42-year-old pace sensation retired from international cricket with a remarkable tally of 704 Test wickets and over 991 international scalps.
