A Historic Debut for Jai Moondra

Tonk (Rajasthan) [India], June 27: Although India faced a 34-run defeat against Ireland in their first T20I match in Belfast, the standout moment for many in Rajasthan was the remarkable debut of Jai Moondra, a left-arm pacer from Tonk. His impressive bowling performance contributed to Ireland's first-ever international win over India.

Making his debut on Friday, the 29-year-old Moondra made an immediate impact by taking the wicket of Sanju Samson with his very first delivery. He later dismissed Shivam Dube, concluding his spell with commendable figures of 2 wickets for 25 runs in four overs.

Back in Tonk, Jai's family celebrated his achievement while watching the match together. They cheered for every boundary scored by the Indian team but expressed their pride and joy whenever Jai took a wicket, despite the team's loss.

Jai's mother, Vidya Moondra, shared her mixed emotions, stating, "While I am saddened by India's loss, my son performed exceptionally and brought pride to our family, Rajasthan, and the nation. I am incredibly proud of him. After 10th grade, he focused on his studies as his father wanted him to complete his education before pursuing cricket. He eventually joined an academy to hone his skills."

His uncle, Kanhaiya Lal Moondra, echoed similar sentiments, expressing his overwhelming joy at Jai's debut. "Words cannot capture my happiness. My son has made history. Although we are disappointed with India's loss, we are immensely proud of him," he remarked.

Jai's cricket journey began in Tonk under the guidance of coach Imtiaz Ali, on the same ground that nurtured Indian pacer Khaleel Ahmed. He represented Tonk and Rajasthan at the Under-14 level before moving to Ireland in May 2021 to pursue an M Tech degree.

While studying, Jai continued to play cricket, initially joining the renowned Leinster Cricket Club in Dublin. He was part of the team that clinched the Irish Senior Cup in 2023 and gradually made a name for himself with his aggressive left-arm pace and useful batting. After obtaining Irish citizenship in 2025, he secured a spot on the national team.

On Friday, Jai made his mark early in the match, bowling in the second over of India's innings. He took Sanju Samson's wicket with his first ball and allowed only seven runs in that over. In the fifth over, he was trusted again by his captain, conceding just four runs.

He struck again in the 16th over, dismissing Shivam Dube off the last ball with a sharp return catch after giving away six runs in that over. Jai nearly claimed a third wicket in his final over, but a catch by Harshit Rana was dropped on the last ball. He concluded with figures of 2 for 25, playing a pivotal role in Ireland's historic win.

Ireland is set to face India again in the second T20I on Sunday in Belfast, aiming to secure the series.
