Jadumani Singh's Emotional Victory at Commonwealth Games 2026
Jadumani Singh Reflects on His Silver Medal Win
New Delhi, August 10: Indian boxer Jadumani Singh, who secured a silver medal in the men's 55kg division at the Commonwealth Games 2026, shared his heartfelt experience of defeating a Pakistani opponent on Kargil Vijay Diwas during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During a gathering at his residence in New Delhi, PM Modi engaged with the medalists from the Commonwealth Games 2026, allowing athletes to recount their unforgettable moments from the event.
In the discussion, PM Modi inquired about Jadumani's victory on the significant date of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
“Who emerged victorious on Kargil Vijay Diwas?” PM Modi asked in a video posted on his YouTube channel on Monday.
Jadumani expressed that the date was particularly meaningful to him due to his ties with the Indian Army.
“It was Kargil Day. The match against Pakistan took place on that day. As someone connected to the Indian Army, I was determined to win. I triumphed with a 5-0 score and dedicated the victory to our heroes in the Indian Army,” Jadumani recounted.
He achieved a decisive 5-0 unanimous decision against Pakistan's Sumama Rehman in the Round of 16 at the Games.
PM Modi commended Jadumani, noting that dedicating his win to the Kargil heroes added profound significance to his accomplishment.
“Recalling that moment, especially since you are from the forces, I believe your sentiment of dedicating your medal to the Kargil victors has added extra honor to your victory. And you defeated exactly the opponent you were meant to!” PM Modi remarked.
During the same interaction, PM Modi also lauded Mirabai Chanu for her touching medal-winning experience.
Chanu further established her legacy as one of India's premier weightlifters by clinching her third CWG gold in Glasgow in the 48 kg category, following her previous golds in 2018 and 2022.
With an Olympic silver in the 49 kg category and three World Championship medals, including a gold in 2017, Mirabai's accolades mark her as a true legend in the sport. An Asian Games medal would complete her collection from all major multi-sport events.
“You have brought immense pride. So many tears were shed; it felt like a gold medal was falling with every drop,” PM Modi told Chanu, who won gold in Glasgow 2026.
Mirabai reflected on her journey, sharing that she felt emotional after her victory, especially after narrowly missing out on an Olympic medal.
“I was overwhelmed and emotional that day. I cried because I missed a medal by just 1 kg at the Olympics. Athletes face numerous challenges. Over the past four years, I dealt with injuries and family issues,” she explained.
She added that the moment of standing on the podium and witnessing the national flag rise is indescribably moving for every athlete.
“When our flag is raised and the National Anthem plays, we can't help but shed tears,” Mirabai shared.
India concluded its Commonwealth Games journey in Glasgow with a total of 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze, securing fourth place in the overall medal tally.
The Glasgow Games wrapped up after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which is set to host the centenary edition of the multi-sport event in Ahmedabad in 2030.
