Warm Welcome for Ishika Sambharwal in Bhiwani
Ishika Sambharwal, a member of the Indian women's hockey team that recently secured a gold medal, received a heartfelt reception upon her return to Bhiwani on Sunday.
A large crowd of sports fans and local residents gathered along the streets to participate in a celebratory roadshow.
Ishika was greeted with garlands at Bhagat Singh Chowk, from where she rode in an open vehicle through Dinod and Hansi gates, eventually arriving at her home in Sector 13.
Well-wishers lined the route to express their congratulations to the athlete.
Feeling elated, Ishika attributed her success to the unwavering support from her family, especially her parents.
"I am overwhelmed by the love and support I have received. I promise to keep working hard," she expressed.
She also mentioned that the women's hockey team has qualified for the 2028 LA Olympics following their triumph at the Asian Games, emphasizing that the squad will now concentrate on the upcoming Olympics.
"With two years remaining until the Olympics, we will focus on refining every detail to improve ourselves. Our goal is to secure another gold medal for India," she stated.
Ishika dedicated her Asian Games gold medal to her family and all those who have supported her journey.
She credited her father, Virender Singh, who has been her coach since her early days, for playing a pivotal role in her introduction to hockey and guiding her career.
"I began playing hockey because of my father. After making it to the junior team, I trained in Bengaluru and later joined the senior team. I am currently training with them in preparation for the Olympics," she shared.
Reflecting on the Asian Games, she noted that the team had aimed for the gold medal right from the start of the tournament.
"The Indian women's team had not won a gold medal in hockey for 44 years, so we were determined to turn that dream into reality," she added.
Ishika's father, Virender Singh, remarked that he recognized her potential in the sport at a young age.
He emphasized that nurturing a sportsperson requires years of dedication and financial backing.
Bhiwani-Mahendragarh MP Dharambir Singh also visited Ishika's home, expressing pride in the fact that a local girl played a crucial role in India's gold medal victory at the Asian Games.
