IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad: Ishan Kishan has been appointed as the interim captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), stepping in for Pat Cummins, who is sidelined due to a back injury and will miss the initial matches of this season's Indian Premier League. Alongside Kishan, the dynamic Abhishek Sharma will serve as vice-captain. In a statement released on X, SRH confirmed, “Pat Cummins will miss a few games while recovering from injury. Until he recovers, Ishan Kishan will be the Captain and Abhishek Sharma will be the Vice-Captain.”

Although Kishan's role is temporary, it could pave the way for him to be groomed as a future leader for SRH. This opportunity comes at a crucial time for the 27-year-old, especially considering Cummins' status as one of the most sought-after captains globally. However, his availability can be inconsistent due to injuries or national commitments, which often leaves SRH in search of an interim captain.

IPL 2026: Kishan's Potential as a Long-Term Captain

Kishan has proven his leadership skills in the T20 format, having successfully led Jharkhand to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. He was also the tournament's top scorer, amassing 517 runs with an impressive average of 57.44 and a strike rate of 197.33, which earned him a spot on the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2026. His performance was pivotal in helping India defend their T20 title at home.

Given his current form and recent successes as a captain, Kishan is a strong candidate for SRH's long-term captaincy in the IPL. If he performs well during his captaincy stint this season, SRH may consider retaining him for the future. The IPL 2026 season is set to commence on Saturday, March 28, 2026, with the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), facing off against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Last season, SRH finished sixth in the points table.
