Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - On September 7, East Zone captain Ishan Kishan shared how his role in leadership has enhanced his situational awareness and fostered a more composed mindset. This reflection came after his impressive innings of 270 runs in the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Kishan's remarkable score of 270 off 334 deliveries was instrumental in East Zone amassing 708 runs in their first innings against South Zone.
After his extraordinary performance, Kishan emphasized the importance of a captain's vigilance on the field, stating, “As a captain, developing situational awareness is crucial. You must remain alert throughout the day to grasp what is unfolding and what is not. It’s essential to support your teammates,” as reported by a Media House.
The left-handed batsman noted that captaincy entails a commitment to assist teammates in their development, highlighting that leadership requires attention to often overlooked details.
“There are numerous minor aspects we frequently neglect in our routines. You might not engage with your players or help them identify ways to improve. However, as a captain, it becomes your responsibility to guide them,” he remarked.
Kishan acknowledged that embracing responsibility at this point in his career has significantly influenced his personal development and altered his approach to challenges.
“You must take responsibility. If not now, then when? I’m not a newcomer at 22 years old. This entire journey fosters substantial personal growth, and while it may not be immediately apparent, your mindset transforms, leading to a calmer demeanor,” the East Zone captain explained, as quoted by a Media House.
In February 2024, Kishan lost his central contract with India due to a lack of focus on domestic cricket. However, he has since engaged in various tournaments, reigniting his passion for red-ball cricket.
“I genuinely enjoyed the experience. I returned to the grind and worked hard for about two years. However, when you play consistently for the Indian team, you often find yourself in a rhythm. While you may be a talented player, your growth can plateau. Stepping back to domestic cricket allows you to start anew. To re-enter the national team, you must outperform others. It’s not about anyone else; it’s about your own improvement,” Kishan stated, as quoted by a Media House.
Kishan's outstanding 270 runs, along with Kumar Kushagra's first Duleep Trophy century, propelled East Zone to a staggering total of 708 all out on Day 2 of the final against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
The duo formed a formidable fifth-wicket partnership of 230 runs, with Kushagra contributing 101 runs, while Kishan also surpassed 4,000 runs in first-class cricket. Despite losing wickets towards the end, East Zone maintained their stronghold, putting South Zone under considerable pressure ahead of their first-innings response.
