Former Cricketer Calls for Extended ODI Series

As India gears up for another year filled with cricket, ex-Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has raised an intriguing point regarding the absence of longer ODI series. He questioned why there are no five-match ODI series or triangular/quadrangular tournaments, especially with key players excelling in the format.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli enter the New Year focusing solely on ODIs, following a remarkable 2025 where they clinched the ICC Champions Trophy and showcased stellar performances in crucial matches. Their journey included overcoming initial challenges during the Australian tour, but both players have since retired from Test cricket, leaving fans disappointed.

The duo will kick off their campaign for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup with a three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11.

During a discussion on 'Follow the Blues' on JioHotstar, Pathan expressed, "Why can’t we have five ODIs instead of three? Why not arrange a triangular or quadrangular series? With these two legends playing just one format, it would be beneficial to see more of them on the field."

He emphasized their ongoing performance, noting, "The World Cup is still a while away, but it’s crucial for them to keep playing and representing India. Their participation in domestic cricket is equally important, as it enhances their game and benefits the team."

In the past year, the 'Ro-Ko' duo emerged as India's leading run-scorers in ODIs, with Virat accumulating 651 runs in 13 innings at an impressive average of 65.10, including three centuries and four fifties, with a top score of 135. Rohit closely followed with 650 runs in 14 innings, averaging 50.00, featuring two centuries and four fifties, with a best score of 121*.

Both players also participated in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where Virat scored 131 and 77, while Rohit achieved 155* and a duck. Despite focusing solely on ODIs, they have shattered numerous batting records, reminding fans of their peak performances.

The last five-match ODI series India played was against Australia in 2019, leading up to that year's World Cup. Since then, ODI series have typically been limited to three matches, even during World Cup years. The most recent triangular series occurred in 2015 against England and Australia in Australia, prior to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.
