Iraq Secures Spot in FIFA World Cup 2026 After 40-Year Absence
Iraq's Historic Qualification for the World Cup
Monterrey [Mexico], April 1: Iraq has successfully qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026 by narrowly defeating Bolivia 2-1 in a crucial intercontinental playoff, marking their return to the global football stage after nearly four decades.
As reported by ESPN, the Asian team delivered a composed performance at Estadio BBVA on Tuesday, clinching the last available spot in the newly expanded 48-team tournament. Iraq last participated in the World Cup in 1986, and this qualification ends a long wait for the 'Lions of Mesopotamia.'
The match began with Iraq taking an early lead in the first half, thanks to forward Ali Al-Hamadi, who scored with a precise header from a set-piece. Bolivia managed to equalize before halftime when Moises Paniagua capitalized on an attacking opportunity.
However, Iraq quickly regained the lead shortly after the second half commenced. Substitute Marko Farji made an immediate impact by assisting Aymen Hussein, who scored in the 53rd minute. Iraq's disciplined defense then effectively thwarted Bolivia's attempts to equalize, despite their efforts with long-range shots and aerial crosses.
This victory places Iraq in Group I, where they will face formidable opponents including France, Norway, and Senegal. Their campaign kicks off against Norway on June 16, followed by matches against France on June 22 and Senegal on June 26.
Under the leadership of head coach Graham Arnold, Iraq has demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout their qualification process, overcoming various logistical challenges to achieve this significant victory.
Bolivia, who reached the playoff after defeating Suriname, fell short in their quest to return to the World Cup, with their last appearance remaining a distant memory.
