Iran's Captain Expresses Gratitude to Mexican Fans

In a heartfelt message, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, the captain of Iran's national football team, conveyed his sincere appreciation to the people of Mexico for their warm support during the FIFA World Cup 2026. The team has formed a unique connection with the Mexican community after relocating their tournament base to Tijuana.

Jahanbakhsh commended the welcoming atmosphere his team experienced in Mexico, especially following a tough lead-up to the tournament. Iran managed to secure a challenging 0-0 draw against Belgium in Los Angeles.

Reflecting on their time in Tijuana, Jahanbakhsh stated, "We love the Mexican people. The welcome we received was incredible, and the hospitality was outstanding. There is a genuine bond forming between our players and the Mexican fans, and I want to express my gratitude by saying, 'Muchas Gracias!'"

Iran shifted their World Cup base from Arizona to Tijuana due to uncertainties regarding travel and entry into the United States. Since this move, Mexican fans have shown tremendous support for Team Melli, creating a vibrant home-like atmosphere during their matches.

On the field, Iran continued their strong performance with a resilient draw against Belgium. Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was exceptional, making seven crucial saves that frustrated the Belgian side, earning him the Superior Player of the Match title.

Belgium faced additional challenges when defender Nathan Ngoy received a red card in the 66th minute, but Iran had already showcased their defensive strength and determination to secure a valuable point.

Having opened their World Cup journey with an exciting 2-2 draw against New Zealand, Iran currently holds second place in Group G with two points from two matches. Egypt leads the group after defeating New Zealand, while Belgium sits in third place.

Next, Team Melli will head to Seattle for a critical final group-stage match against Egypt, with hopes of advancing to the Round of 32 still very much alive.
