Iran and Belgium Battle to a 0-0 Draw

Inglewood [US], June 22: A disciplined Iranian team showcased their defensive prowess by securing a 0-0 draw against Belgium in their second Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday (local time). The match was further complicated for Belgium when Nathan Ngoy received a red card, reducing his team to ten players.

Belgium started the match with confidence, dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities early on. Maxim De Cuyper tested Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand with a powerful shot from distance, which he managed to save comfortably. Iran, however, posed a threat on the counter and nearly took the lead in the 24th minute when Mehdi Taremi scored from a well-executed free-kick, only for VAR to rule it out due to a narrow offside.

Throughout the first half, Belgium maintained control, launching multiple attempts on goal. Yet, they were thwarted repeatedly by Beiranvand, who made several key saves to keep the score level as the teams headed into halftime.

The match shifted dramatically in the 66th minute when Belgium was reduced to ten men. Nathan Ngoy received a straight red card for a foul on Taremi, who was through on goal after a defensive mistake. This incident marked the eighth red card of the tournament and forced Belgium to adjust their tactics defensively.

With the numerical advantage, Iran ramped up their offensive efforts, bringing in fresh attackers and applying consistent pressure on the Belgian defense. Despite creating a few late chances, they could not find the back of the net.

The match concluded in a stalemate, with both teams earning a crucial point. Group G remains competitive, with Iran (first) and Belgium (second) each on two points, while New Zealand (third) and Egypt (fourth) are tied with one point each.
