Injury Woes Hit Kolkata Knight Riders Ahead of IPL 2026
IPL 2026 Set to Kick Off Amid Injury Concerns
The IPL 2026 is scheduled to commence on March 28 (Saturday), marking the start of a two-month cricket extravaganza. However, the tournament is already facing challenges due to a series of injuries affecting nearly all ten franchises. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are among the teams hit hardest by this injury crisis. Harshit Rana has been officially ruled out for the entire tournament, while Matheesha Pathirana is expected to miss the initial matches. The team has now received another setback in their bowling lineup.
As reported by a Bengali daily, a key Indian pacer, Akash Deep, who has been a consistent presence in Test matches, has yet to join the KKR squad. This delay is attributed to an ankle injury he sustained during the Ranji Trophy season while playing for Bengal. Currently, he is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. A source from the CoE mentioned, "He will remain in rehab for several more days, and there is no definitive timeline for his return." Furthermore, if Akash Deep requires surgery for his injury, he could be sidelined for 7-8 months.
Harshit Rana Officially Out for IPL 2026
In response to an inquiry from a sports outlet, Abhishek Nayar confirmed that Harshit Rana will not participate in the IPL season due to his injury. He indicated that the team is evaluating several bowlers who have been tested in practice sessions to find a suitable replacement. "Losing Harshit is a significant setback, as he has been a vital part of the team over the past few seasons, including the championship season. His growth as a cricketer has been remarkable, and he will be missed greatly," Nayar stated during a KKR media session organized by JioStar.
He added, "We have been assessing various bowlers over the past few days, and we are working with our leadership group to determine who can step into his role effectively. We are still in the evaluation phase, but we hope to identify a capable replacement soon."
