Indian Boxing Team Prepares for Asian Championships

New Delhi [India], April 30: A contingent of 56 young Indian boxers is ready to kick off their journey at the Asian Boxing U15 and U17 Championships 2026, set to commence tomorrow in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This event will showcase some of the brightest young talents from across Asia in various weight classes.


India enters this esteemed tournament with a robust and diverse team, featuring both boys and girls, highlighting the nation’s commitment to grassroots development and the cultivation of future champions.


The U-17 squads consist of 13 boxers each for boys and girls, competing in weight categories from 44-46kg to over 80kg, supported by four coaches and a physiotherapist for each team. In the U-15 division, there are 15 boxers in both boys' and girls' teams, competing in weight classes ranging from 30-33kg to over 70kg, with five coaches and a physiotherapist accompanying them, as stated in a release.


Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India, remarked, “These championships provide a vital opportunity for our young athletes to gain international experience and challenge themselves against Asia's best. In recent years, boxing has emerged as India’s leading sport, consistently achieving the highest medal counts in major international events, including multi-sport competitions like the Youth Asian Games and various World and Continental Championships. This ongoing success underscores the strength of our grassroots initiatives. We have a talented group of athletes across different age groups, and we believe this team represents the next generation of champions for Indian boxing.”


The championships are essential for spotting and nurturing the next elite boxers, with many of these young talents likely to advance through the national system and compete for India in significant international events in the future.
