Historic Achievements by Indian Wrestlers

New Delhi [India], May 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his congratulations to India's wrestlers for their remarkable achievements at the 2026 U23 Asian Championships held in Da Nang, Vietnam.


He commended both the Men's Freestyle and Women's Wrestling teams for clinching the team titles, marking India's most successful medal tally in the history of this event.


The Indian men's freestyle wrestling team emerged as the champions at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships, securing the Team Championship Trophy with an impressive first-place finish.


India showcased its dominance in freestyle wrestling, finishing ahead of strong competitors Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, who took second and third places, respectively.


PM Modi praised the athletes for their exceptional performance and wished them continued success in future competitions.


“Our wrestlers delivered an outstanding performance! The Men's Freestyle and Women's Wrestling teams achieved Team Titles at the 2026 U23 Asian Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam. The Men's Freestyle Wrestling team earned 9 medals, including 4 Golds, marking India's highest overall medal tally in the history of the U23 Asian Championships. The women's wrestling team secured 10 medals, with 6 Golds. Additionally, the Greco-Roman team achieved its best-ever medal count with 8 medals. Congratulations to our wrestlers, and my best wishes for their future endeavors,” PM Modi shared in a post on X.



This remarkable victory in freestyle wrestling concluded a phenomenal continental campaign for the Indian team, which amassed an impressive total of 27 medals, including eleven gold, seven silver, and nine bronze across Freestyle, Women's Wrestling, and Greco-Roman categories.


The championship-winning freestyle team finished their campaign with nine medals: four gold, three silver, and two bronze. Akshay T Dhere (57kg) and Vicky (97kg) set the stage with their gold medals, followed by Kumar Mohit (65kg) and Chandermohan (79kg), who also claimed top honors.


Deepak Rathi (61kg), Punit Kumar (92kg), and Lacky (125kg) added to the historic team title with their silver medals, while Deepak Berwal (74kg) and Mor Sachin (82kg) completed the freestyle medal tally with important bronze finishes.
