India's Upcoming Test Against Afghanistan: Key Players Likely to Be Rested

As India gears up for a one-off Test against Afghanistan shortly after IPL 2026, key players like Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah may be rested to prevent burnout. This strategic decision aims to keep the team fresh for upcoming ODIs and the ODI World Cup 2027. With several first-choice players likely sidelined, new talents such as Gurnoor Brar and Manav Suthar could make their debuts. The focus remains on managing player workload effectively as the cricket calendar heats up.

India's Post-IPL Schedule

Following the conclusion of IPL 2026, the Indian cricket team will quickly shift gears, facing Afghanistan in a one-off Test match scheduled from June 6 to 10 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. This match comes just six days after the IPL final, necessitating a swift return to competitive play for the players. However, it is anticipated that several prominent players may sit out this match, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a significant decision, despite India's urgent need to improve their standing in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table.

Resting Key Players

First-Choice Players To Be Rested

As reported, leading Test players, including captain Shubman Gill and star bowler Jasprit Bumrah, are likely to be rested for the Afghanistan Test. This strategy aims to prevent player burnout following a demanding IPL season. The focus is now shifting towards the ODI series against Afghanistan and the subsequent white-ball tour to England, especially with the ODI World Cup 2027 and the WTC on the horizon. The fact that the Afghanistan Test does not contribute to WTC points significantly influences this decision.

According to a BCCI source, "The short interval between the IPL final and the Afghanistan Test raises concerns about player fatigue, especially with three ODIs and a white-ball series in England on the horizon. The Afghanistan Test lacks WTC points, so managing player workload is crucial, as some players will be on the road for nearly two months with a packed cricket schedule ahead."

"ODIs and WTC are the current priorities, and it’s essential to keep our top players fit and available for the upcoming four Tests against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, along with numerous ODIs. Why risk a player like Bumrah for a match that doesn’t count for WTC points?" the source added. However, this decision may be revisited if teams like Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians fail to reach the playoffs, potentially opening the door for Bumrah and Gill's selection.

Potential New Faces in the Squad

Multiple Debuts On Cards Vs Afghanistan

With several first-choice players likely to be rested, the selectors may call up multiple newcomers for their India debut. Among the potential debutants are Gurnoor Brar and left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, both of whom have been part of the Indian setup. Additionally, Harsh Dubey and Auqib Nabi could also receive their first call-ups following impressive performances in the Ranji Trophy. Devdutt Padikkal and Nitish Kumar Reddy are also in contention for selection, according to reports.

"The current selection panel is known for its careful approach. Gurnoor, Manav, Harsh, Auqib, and Devdutt have all shown remarkable talent. Ultimately, the decision will depend on discussions between the selection committee and the medical team, as effectively managing resources is crucial. There’s no benefit in exposing star players to a five-day match that offers no WTC points," the source concluded.
