India's U17 Women's Team Set for Crucial Quarter-Final Against China
High-Stakes Clash in Suzhou
The U17 women's football team from India is gearing up to take on the host nation, China, in a pivotal quarter-final match of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026, scheduled for Monday at the Suzhou Sports Centre Stadium.
A win for the Young Tigresses would secure their spot in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco 2026. Although India has hosted the U17 men’s and women’s World Cups in 2017 and 2022, respectively, they have yet to qualify for the global tournament through the qualification process, as noted by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
For the past two weeks, the Young Tigresses have enjoyed a familiar environment while training at the Suzhou Taimei Xiangguli Hotel, with all their matches taking place at the nearby Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre, which features eight pitches, including three for matches and five for training, all conveniently located within walking distance.
The quarter-final match will be held at the 35,000-seat Suzhou Sports Centre Stadium, where over 10,000 fans attended China’s opening match against Myanmar on May 1. After weeks of training in a close-knit setting, the Young Tigresses are ready to face the lively atmosphere expected from the home crowd.
Head coach Pamela Conti emphasized that the team's focus is solely on the upcoming match. “We are approaching this game with the same excitement and determination as we have throughout the tournament,” she stated.
“We recognize that we are up against a formidable opponent, but we will strive to bring joy to our country,” Conti added.
The Young Tigresses had their first look at the Suzhou Sports Centre Stadium during an official familiarization session on Sunday afternoon.
“It’s an incredible feeling to compete against the hosts, China. We anticipate a loud crowd and many fans supporting their team,” said midfielder Bonifilia Shullai.
“I am immensely proud of our team for reaching this stage, and I hope we can deliver a strong performance, fight hard, and maintain the level we’ve shown so far. Our ultimate goal is to qualify for the World Cup, and we will keep pushing until the final whistle,” she added.
Shullai, a 16-year-old from Shillong, expressed that playing in such a significant stadium at the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup is a remarkable experience that will benefit their future careers.
India advanced to the quarter-finals after a decisive 4-0 win over Lebanon in their last group-stage match, marking the nation’s first-ever appearance in the knockout stage of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup.
The Young Tigresses also made history as the first Indian women’s team to reach the knockout stage of any Asian Cup competition since the 2004 AFC U19 Women’s Championship, which took place in Jiangsu province, China, just 50 kilometers from the current match venue.
China enters the match as one of the tournament favorites, having won all three of their group matches against Myanmar (6-0), Vietnam (3-0), and Thailand (6-0). In the knockout stage, if the match is tied after 90 minutes, the winner will be determined by penalties, with no extra time played.
“China is one of the strongest teams in Asia and will be highly motivated playing at home,” Conti remarked.
“They have the tallest average height in the tournament and possess physically strong players who attack in numbers, so we must remain very focused defensively. This is an area we have been concentrating on,” she added.
India and China have faced each other only once at this level, during the AFC U16 Women’s Championship qualifiers in 2008, where China narrowly won 1-0.
Despite the daunting challenge ahead, the Young Tigresses are entering the match with confidence built from months of preparation and a tournament run that has already made history.
Centre-back Abhista Basnett, who captained the team against Japan earlier in the tournament, emphasized the need to stay focused after celebrating their qualification.
“We are thrilled to be in the quarter-finals, but our journey is not over yet. There is still one more match between us and our dream, so our complete focus is on that,” Abhista stated after Sunday morning’s training session.
“We enjoyed our qualification celebration, but now our attention has shifted back to our primary goal. Reaching the quarter-finals was just the first step; the next match is crucial for us,” she added.
The 15-year-old from Pakyong, Sikkim, also highlighted the importance of maintaining mental focus despite the atmosphere surrounding the hosts.
“China is a strong team, and they will have the crowd behind them. However, once we step onto the pitch, we will concentrate on our game and our aspirations. We know their style of play, we have prepared well, and we are ready to give our all,” Abhista said.
Throughout the tournament, Conti has emphasized that the experience gained is vital for the players’ development. Competing against a team like China on a significant stage, in front of a large audience, is another step in their growth.
“This is a fantastic experience for the players. Matches like these contribute to their development. At the same time, we must respect and acknowledge China’s strength,” the Italian coach remarked.
“The most important thing is for the girls to enjoy this experience. These matches help them grow as players and individuals. They must understand that they are about to face a great team in a large stadium, and regardless of the outcome, they will have memories of something unique and special,” Conti added.
Beyond tactics and preparation, the emotional bond within the squad has become a defining aspect of India’s campaign.
“The support we have received since qualifying has been incredible. My message to everyone is to keep supporting and motivating us, no matter the outcome,” Abhista said.
“This entire journey, from training camps to qualifiers and now this tournament, has united us like a family. We understand each other exceptionally well now, including players, coaches, and staff. I believe that bond is one of the greatest things we have gained from this experience,” she added.
Conti believes that the significance of this occasion extends beyond the ninety minutes of play.
“My message to the girls is to become an inspiration for future generations of girls in India. They should relish the moment because football brings emotions that nothing else can provide. This match could lead us to glory,” Conti concluded.
The match will be streamed live on the AFC Asian Cup YouTube Channel, starting at 17:00 IST.
