India's Test Squad Preparation Ahead of Afghanistan Clash

As Team India gears up for a one-off Test match against Afghanistan on June 6, the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is set to make crucial decisions regarding the squad. With a focus on maintaining a strong lineup, they are likely to stick with regular Test bowlers, potentially overlooking Mohammed Shami. The committee will also assess Jasprit Bumrah's workload management. Additionally, a pool of fast bowlers is being prepared for future Test cycles, with Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar among the targeted selections. This strategic approach aims to ensure the team's readiness for upcoming challenges.

India's Upcoming Test Match Against Afghanistan

Following the conclusion of the IPL on May 31, Team India is set to return to the field on June 6 for a one-off Test match against Afghanistan. This match will not be part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. With the match approaching, the selection committee is expected to make significant decisions regarding the team, particularly concerning the red-ball format.

As reported, the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is likely to maintain the current bowling lineup despite the match against Afghanistan. This suggests that Mohammed Shami may not be included once again. The committee will also deliberate on whether to rest Jasprit Bumrah for workload management in their upcoming meeting.

A source indicated, "The selectors are committed to fielding their strongest Test squad, regardless of the opponent. They are cautious about distributing Test caps too liberally. Siraj has a high workload capacity, while Prasidh has not participated in an IPL match since April 24. Additionally, Nitish Kumar Reddy is being considered for his potential contributions to the seam-bowling unit. The BCCI is closely monitoring all relevant data for workload management."

Preparing a Pool of Fast Bowlers

In the upcoming selection meeting scheduled within the next week to ten days, the committee aims to finalize a pool of fast bowlers for the forthcoming Test cycle. Their workload will be managed judiciously throughout the remainder of IPL 2026. Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar, both part of the India A setup, are among the primary targets for selection. Furthermore, Jammu and Kashmir's Auqib Nabi is also being evaluated for Test selection following a remarkable performance in this season's Ranji Trophy.
