Samson Dropped from the Lineup

The Indian cricket team management made a significant decision for the second T20I against England by excluding Sanju Samson from the playing XI. The wicketkeeper-batter has been struggling with his form in the UK, scoring just five runs across two matches against Ireland and failing to score in the first T20I against England. In his place, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was included, marking his debut as the youngest T20I player for India. Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his surprise at this selection, labeling it as 'bizarre' and suggesting that Samson could have been utilized in the number three position. He shared his thoughts on social media, questioning the decision and hoping it was due to an injury rather than a selection blunder.

Samson, who played a pivotal role in India's T20 World Cup victory in 2026, was anticipated to receive more opportunities despite recent setbacks. However, after three consecutive poor performances, he found himself out of the squad. Sooryavanshi, unfortunately, did not have a lengthy innings, scoring just 14 runs off 10 balls.

Gautam Gambhir's Discussion with Samson

Gautam Gambhir's chat with Sanju Samson

Following the toss, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen having a brief conversation with Sanju Samson, likely explaining the rationale behind his exclusion from the playing XI. Samson had previously made a strong comeback towards the end of the tournament, scoring 97 in a crucial match against the West Indies, followed by 89 in the semi-final against England and another 89 in the final against New Zealand. Sooryavanshi earned his spot in the T20I team after an impressive performance in IPL 2026, although he remained on the bench during the match against Ireland before stepping in for the second game against England. The third T20I of the series is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7.
