India's T20I Squad Announced for UK Tour with New Leadership
Overview of the T20I Squad for the UK Tour
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed the T20I squad for the upcoming tour of the UK. The Indian cricket team is set to compete in two T20 matches in Ireland, followed by a five-match series against England. Following a prolonged period of underperformance, Suryakumar Yadav, the captain who led India to a T20 World Cup victory, has been removed from his position. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain for the T20I format. Although Iyer has not participated in a T20I since December 2023, his impressive performance in the IPL, where he guided Punjab Kings to the finals in 2025 and performed well in IPL 2026, made him a strong candidate for leadership.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Joins the Squad
In a notable move, the selection committee has called up 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who made a significant impact in the IPL by winning the Orange Cap. He is expected to open alongside the explosive Abhishek Sharma, who amassed 563 runs in IPL 2026 and has been a standout player for India in T20Is. While Sanju Samson has also shown promise as an opener, if the team opts to field both Vaibhav and Abhishek, Samson may need to bat at number three. Ishan Kishan retains his spot in the squad, and Tilak Varma has been elevated to the role of T20I vice-captain. The squad also features a strong lineup of all-rounders, including Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar. For fast bowling, India has selected Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prince Yadav, while Ravi Bishnoi and Varun Chakravarthy will serve as specialist spinners. Notably, Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill are absent from the squad, and Jasprit Bumrah has been rested.
