India's Disappointing T20I Series Against Ireland

Belfast [Ireland], June 29: Ryan ten Doeschate, the assistant coach for India, expressed disbelief in the locker room following the team's unexpected 2-0 defeat in the T20I series against Ireland. He commended the Irish team for their superior execution of fundamental skills and emphasized the need for India to learn from this experience, as reported by a sports news outlet.

This series marked a historic moment for Ireland, as they achieved their first-ever series win against India across all formats, simultaneously ending India's impressive 16-series winning streak in T20 internationals.

In response to the loss, ten Doeschate acknowledged the disappointment felt by the team but praised Ireland for their disciplined approach to the game.

“There’s a bit of disbelief,” ten Doeschate remarked when discussing the team's reaction to the defeat. “It’s tough to criticize players who have just won a World Cup. We were outperformed by a team that executed the basics exceptionally well,” he added.

He highlighted that the series underscored the necessity for the team to adapt to different playing conditions and opponents outside of the subcontinent.

“Firstly, credit goes to Ireland. Secondly, we need to learn to adjust to varying conditions. That’s the key takeaway from this series,” he stated.

Ten Doeschate noted that the Indian players are well-versed in playing in their home conditions, but this series served as a reminder that they must adapt their strategies when competing abroad.

Reflecting on the series loss, he admitted that India faced challenges in adjusting to the windy conditions, while also acknowledging Ireland's effective execution of their game plan.

“The conditions were undoubtedly a factor in our defeat,” ten Doeschate said. “We discussed these challenges beforehand, but we didn’t manage them well during the matches. The wind was a significant issue,” he explained.

Despite the adverse conditions, he refused to use them as an excuse, insisting that the team must find better strategies to tackle different challenges when playing overseas.

“No excuses here, but we need to develop solutions for playing differently and more effectively when faced with new challenges,” he remarked.

Ten Doeschate praised Ireland's disciplined bowling, which restricted India from playing their usual aggressive style.

“Ireland executed their bowling strategy excellently. They prevented us from hitting straight. In both matches, we managed only two straight sixes, both off spinners. They performed the basics well, and we struggled to counter that,” he noted.

He concluded by stating that India's batting strategy, which has been shaped by home conditions, needs to evolve for future international matches.

“We’ve become accustomed to a style where hitting sixes is easier. This will also be relevant when we play in England, where conditions may be slightly different. We must adapt and be smarter in our approach if we aim to secure victories there,” ten Doeschate added.
