India's T20 Challenge: Tilak Varma Shines Amidst England's Bowling Prowess
India's Performance in the Second T20 Against England
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's highly anticipated debut did not meet expectations, but India, thanks to Tilak Varma's impressive last-over performance, managed to post a total of 190 for 7 against England in challenging, windy conditions during the second T20 International on Saturday.
Tilak, who scored 24 runs off just 11 balls, faced criticism for his batting style but made a significant impact by hitting Jofra Archer for 17 runs in the final over, helping India reach a respectable score, albeit slightly below the expected 200.
The match showcased the difficulties of batting on a skiddy surface with extra bounce and crosswinds, as the world witnessed the debut of a 15-year-old player who broke Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record.
However, his innings was cut short to just 10 balls, where he managed to hit two sixes and two singles for a total of 14 runs before being stumped by Jos Buttler off the bowling of Will Jacks.
Other contributors included Abhishek Sharma with 43 runs off 24 balls, captain Shreyas Iyer with 37 off 22, and Ishan Kishan, who scored 49 runs off 43 balls. Despite their efforts, they struggled to find consistency against a well-mixed England bowling attack.
Kishan, in particular, had a tough time adjusting to the slower deliveries and variations from the spinners, while Abhishek faced early challenges from Archer's pace and bounce.
Sam Curran's clever use of slower balls proved effective, as he took 3 wickets for 33 runs in 4 overs, making it difficult for the Indian batsmen to settle after the powerplay.
Jacks and left-arm spinner Liam Dawson also delivered strong performances, with figures of 1/22 and 1/27 respectively. Even Adil Rashid managed to keep things tight, conceding only 21 runs in 2 overs.
In his first 12 deliveries, Abhishek missed around 10, struggling against Archer's 90 mph pace. Sooryavanshi, too, found it challenging to handle the extra bounce but managed to hit a couple of sixes, showcasing his potential.
However, he was stumped after misjudging a wide off-break from Jacks. Abhishek regained his rhythm against slower bowlers, reaching 43 runs by targeting the shorter side of the field, but was unlucky to be caught off a full toss from Curran.
Iyer and Kishan formed a partnership of 65 runs for the third wicket, but even their supporters would agree that they struggled to dominate the England bowlers during the middle overs. Iyer attempted to use his footwork effectively, but the larger dimensions of Old Trafford made scoring boundaries a challenge.
