Indian Duo Shines at Asian Games

In Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on September 25, India's Manush Shah and Diya Chitale achieved a remarkable feat by securing a bronze medal in the mixed doubles table tennis event during the Asian Games 2026. They faced a tough challenge in the semi-finals against China's Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, ultimately losing with scores of 8-11, 5-11, 8-11, and 2-11.


Ranked eighth globally, the Indian pair's semi-final performance ensured them a podium finish, as there is no playoff for the bronze medal in this event, as reported by ESPN.


This bronze medal marks only the second time India has medaled in mixed doubles table tennis at the Asian Games, following the success of Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra in 2018.


Earlier in the day, Shah and Chitale pulled off a significant upset in the quarter-finals, defeating the world No. 4 duo from Hong Kong, Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem, with a score of 3-1 (11-6, 13-15, 11-9, 11-5), securing India's place on the medal table. Wong and Doo are seasoned competitors, having multiple World Championship medals to their names.


The bronze medal was part of a successful Day 6 for India at the Games, where the country also celebrated victories in other sports.


In shooting, Kamaljeet and Suruchi Inder Singh claimed gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, while Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Rudrankksh Patil, and Niraj Kumar earned silver in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions team event.


In squash, Joshana Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar advanced to the mixed doubles semi-finals, while Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh reached the semi-finals in men's and women's singles, respectively.


India's kabaddi teams also made headlines by reaching the finals, with the women defeating Nepal and the men overcoming Thailand in their semi-final matches.


In hockey, the Indian women's team triumphed over Japan with a score of 3-1 in their Pool B match.


In swimming, Rishabh Das finished sixth in the men's 200m backstroke final, clocking in at 1:58.77, while weightlifter Seram Nirupama Devi placed seventh in the women's 61kg category with a total lift of 217kg.


Boxer Preeti's journey ended in the round of 16 after a 0-5 defeat to North Korea's Pang Chol Mi.


As of now, India's medal tally stands at 20, which includes two gold, eight silver, and ten bronze medals, placing the nation 12th in the overall standings.
