India's Kabaddi Team Gears Up for Asian Games
New Delhi, September 18: The Indian men's kabaddi team is set to compete in the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, showcasing a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent. Captain Sunil Kumar emphasizes that their extensive preparation is a key advantage.
Sunil, a 27-year-old right defender who contributed to India's gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022, leads a squad that includes four members from that victorious team: himself, Arjun Deshwal, Aslam Inamdar, and Pawan Sehrawat.
The 12-player roster also features prominent figures from the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) such as Ashu Malik, Jaideep Dahiya, Devank Dalal, and Rahul Sethpal, alongside younger talents like Ayan Lohchab.
Sunil noted that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the kabaddi federation initiated the team's training camp six to eight months prior, allowing ample time for players to refine their strategies and build team chemistry.
"The preparation has been excellent, as our federation and SAI began our camp well in advance. We have effectively planned our team dynamics and strategies," Sunil shared with SAI Media.
"We initially trained at SAI Bengaluru, then moved to Bellary, and are currently at SAI Gandhinagar," he added.
This thorough preparation has enabled the team to approach the Asian Games with a clear understanding of their roles and strategies, rather than scrambling to establish them at the last minute. Notably, eight of the twelve players are current captains or vice-captains of their respective PKL teams.
India aims to continue its successful legacy in kabaddi at the Asian Games, having secured the men's gold at Hangzhou 2022, with several players from that squad returning, including Sunil, Arjun Deshwal, Aslam Inamdar, and Pawan Sehrawat.
"Our senior players have shaped the team's identity and brought numerous gold medals to India. We aspire to uphold that legacy and add another gold to our collection," Sunil stated.
He emphasized that the team has focused on enhancing its overall structure, including tactical planning, fitness, and individual skill development.
"Victory cannot rely on a single player's effort. Our raiding and defense units are both robust. We have top-tier players in kabaddi, whether in raiding or defense," he explained.
Sunil highlighted the importance of executing their strategies effectively during the competition, stressing that teamwork is essential for success.
His role will be crucial in organizing the defense and ensuring effective communication during high-pressure moments in matches. His experience with many established raiders on the team enhances his understanding of their collective dynamics.
"We aim to preserve the identity established by our seniors in Indian kabaddi, collaborate as a cohesive unit, and give our all at the Asian Games," Sunil concluded.
The kabaddi events at Aichi-Nagoya will take place at the Tokai Citizen Gymnasium, with the men's and women's finals scheduled for September 26. The team's campaign kicks off on September 21.
