Strong Start for Indian Hockey Team

On August 15, in New Delhi, former Indian hockey captain and Olympian Viren Rasquinha commended the Indian men's hockey team for their impressive 3-1 victory against Wales in their World Cup debut, although he expressed disappointment over conceding a late goal.

Rasquinha emphasized the significance of penalty corners, noting that both Harmanpreet Singh and Sanjay showcased their skills, as all three goals scored by India were from drag-flicks.

The Indian men's hockey squad kicked off their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 journey with confidence, achieving a 3-1 win over Wales at the Wagener Hockey Stadium located in Amstelveen, Netherlands.

In a post on X, Rasquinha stated, "A solid start for the Indian Men's Hockey team with a 3-1 win against Wales in our World Cup opener. I am a bit disappointed that we couldn't maintain a clean sheet. Harmanpreet and Sanjay demonstrated the importance of penalty corners for our success in this tournament, with all three goals coming from drag flicks."

Match Highlights

India's scoring was initiated by Sanjay in the 8th minute, followed by captain Harmanpreet Singh, who netted goals in the 11th and 43rd minutes, effectively converting two penalty corners to highlight his crucial role in set pieces.

Wales managed to score through Sam Welsh in the 56th minute, but India's defense remained resilient in the final moments, ensuring a 3-1 victory and securing all three points.
