Historic Victory for Indian Archers

In a remarkable display of skill and composure, India's women's recurve archery team triumphed over South Korea, the reigning Olympic champions, with a score of 5-3, securing their first-ever gold medal at the Asian Games on Friday.

The team, consisting of experienced archer Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma, and 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod, showcased their talent despite challenging windy conditions, outshining the defending champions in a thrilling match.

This victory marks a significant milestone for the Indian women's team, which had recently ended a five-year drought for a World Cup gold in Shanghai, where they also defeated Korea in the semifinals.

The lineup for this match was similar to the one that achieved success in Shanghai, with Kirti stepping in for former world number one Deepika Kumari, who did not qualify for the Asian Games.

The competition began with both teams evenly matched, each finishing the first two sets at 54 and 56 points, respectively, without either gaining a clear lead.

The South Korean team, which included Kang Chaeyoung, a member of the gold medal-winning squad from the Tokyo Olympics, stumbled in the third set, scoring only 52 points after dropping three consecutive 8s.

Seizing the opportunity, India shot 55 points in the third set, taking a 4-2 lead.

In the fourth set, under pressure, Korea managed 54 points. Kirti's initial score of 8 was upgraded to a 9 after a review, bringing India's total to 54, which was sufficient to secure the set and clinch the historic win against the formidable South Korean team.

Earlier, India had advanced to the finals by defeating China 5-1 in the semifinals.

This gold medal in women's recurve archery adds to India's tally, marking the fourth archery gold at the Games, following victories in men's compound, women's compound, and mixed compound events.

Previously, the Indian women's recurve team had secured a bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou.
