India's Journey in the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers

The Indian Women's Hockey Team secured the runner-up position at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers, suffering a 0-2 defeat to England in the championship match held at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Ground on Saturday.

England's Grace Balsdon opened the scoring in the 13th minute, followed by Elizabeth Neal extending their lead in the 43rd minute. India started strong, with Navneet Kaur earning a penalty corner just two minutes into the match. Unfortunately, her drag flick was thwarted by the England goalkeeper, as noted in a press release.

The Indian side displayed commendable discipline, maintaining a solid defensive structure while attempting to penetrate the English defense. However, as the first quarter progressed, England began to assert themselves, earning a penalty corner with two minutes remaining.

Balsdon capitalized on this opportunity, scoring her fifth penalty corner goal of the tournament and putting England ahead.

The second quarter mirrored the first, with both teams exhibiting strong defensive play. India managed eight circle penetrations in the first half but failed to challenge the England goalkeeper significantly, allowing the visitors to maintain their lead at halftime.

With the advantage, England dictated the game's pace, skillfully managing possession. Although India had chances to increase the pressure, England's defense held firm.

Elizabeth Neal doubled England's lead in the third quarter, with her shot deflecting off an Indian defender and slipping past goalkeeper Bichu Devi.

In pursuit of a comeback, India pressed forward for a goal. Despite England's lead, the visitors remained proactive, avoiding a defensive retreat that could have given India an opening. The final quarter was dynamic, with India earning a late penalty corner.

However, they were unable to convert and ultimately faced a 2-0 defeat.
