Significant Draw for Indian Women's Team
The Indian women's hockey team, featuring 11 players making their World Cup debuts, achieved a notable 2-2 draw against the world No. 4, China, in their opening match of Pool D. Head coach Sjoerd Marijne expressed optimism about the future following this result.

India managed to take the lead twice during the match, but China, the silver medalists from the 2024 Olympics, equalized on both occasions.
Marijne commented, "Given that we had 11 debutants, securing a draw against a top-ranked team is promising for our future."
"While I am pleased with the performance, the outcome might have been different had we received a penalty corner at the end. I prefer not to discuss the referee's decision; we must accept it and move forward."
The Indian team had already used their video referral when they sought a penalty corner in the match's closing moments.
"We had a clear case for a penalty corner, but the referee's position made it difficult for her to see. We need to improve our understanding of video referrals," Marijne added.
The coach acknowledged that the team faced challenges during the third quarter but praised their comeback in the final period.
"The third quarter was not our best, but we showed resilience and performed much better in the last quarter," he noted.
Marijne believes this draw alleviates some pressure for the upcoming matches.
"This draw is crucial. A loss would have made the next two matches must-wins. Now, we can concentrate on our own performance without worrying about other teams' results," he explained.
"That has been our focus since my return to coaching."
Next, India will compete against South Africa, and Marijne cautioned his players to avoid complacency.
"South Africa is a strong team, and we must be at our best to face them," he stated.
He also highlighted Navneet Kaur's contributions, emphasizing that the team is not solely dependent on star drag flicker Deepika.
"While everyone focused on Deepika during the Nations Cup, Navneet has also performed exceptionally well in the World Cup qualifiers," Marijne remarked.
Despite creating numerous chances against China, Marijne pointed out that ball retention needs improvement.
"We were defensively solid and created opportunities, but we must enhance our ability to win and maintain possession of the ball," he said.
Navneet, named player of the match, reflected on the team's progress against a historically challenging opponent.
"It was a tough match, but we performed exceptionally well. We led twice, and we need to work on maintaining our leads," she commented.
"In the past, we struggled against China, but today we focused on our game and not on their Olympic achievements, which worked in our favor."
Navneet mentioned that senior players encouraged the younger members to play fearlessly.
"We advised the newcomers to believe in themselves and not be intimidated by the formidable Chinese team," she shared.
Captain Salima Tete expressed satisfaction with the point earned but emphasized the need for continued intensity in future matches.
"We are pleased with the point, but we must fight hard in every match, and we are prepared for that," Salima concluded.
